This painting is the view out my studio window.  Before this series, I must admit my attention was mostly drawn to the ground, fields and distant hills. Not anymore. Turns out theres a whole other vista if you just look up!  I suspect this is true of many things.  It’s amazing what comes into view with a change in perspective!

In my experience, some of the most glorious sunsets arrive after a storm.  As the clouds move off, the sun illuminates what was monochromatic exchanging it for an array of color. Then water droplets left behind by the rain act like a thousand tiny prisms, reflecting the sun beams and making everything glisten. I am fortunate enough to have family living in Hawaii, and even more fortunate that they let me come stay with them!  During one visit, we hiked out to Ka'ena Point Natural Reserve in the Ka’ena Point State Park on the North Shore of Oahu.  Aside from the stunning views of the mountains dropping down to the ocean, forming a coastline of volcanic rock, the reserve is home to hundreds of Laysan Albatross.  These birds are awkward on the ground, but in the air with their wingspan stretching over 6ft, they are stunning.  Taking in that unique landscape with the albatrosses soaring right overhead was a magical experience, and the inspiration behind this piece.

Normally when I start a painting I have some sort of reference. It might be an actual photo or just an image in my head.  Not with this one.  I just picked up a paint tube and started painting.  It turned out to be one of my favorites in the collection and a wonderful reminder that just because I can’t see where something is going doesn’t mean the end result won’t be beautiful!

I love it when the sunlight is at an angle (morning and evening) and the beams of light skip across the tops of trees and hills.  The strong contrasts guide your eye and make it easy to focus on just what is highlighted, instead of trying take everything in at once.  With the information overload that is modern life, so many things clamoring for attention, I find having a focus very restful for my mind :)  This painting was inspired by a photo taken by Beverly “Woody” Ham on her farm in the hills of North Carolina.

I love exploring natural parks and wildlife preserves. This painting is based off an image I took while visiting the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge on the Eastern Shore of the US.  The 15,978 acre preserve was established in 1937 as a refuge for migratory and wintering waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway. The preserve is full of herons and other native birds who have found a haven in the protected landscape.  And... if you time your visit just right, you might see a stunning sunset mirrored in the calm marsh waters.

This was the first painting I did in this series.  It was spring of 2020, and we were all just beginning to realize just how much change we were in for. It was cathartic to process my thoughts on canvas.  Visually this painting is based off a photo taken by Melanie Daigle in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick, Canada, but the motion in the sky and clouds building on the horizon held much more meaning for me.  I was reminded that the winds of change are always there. But as in this painting, sometimes they clear out the clouds, bringing blue skies and sunshine.

There’s really nothing like the unusual types of light that can be seen around storms. The darkened atmosphere pre-storm can lead to golden underglows, cracks in clouds can create stunning focused sunbeams, and of course you need rain to make rainbows.  There is beauty in storms as well as sunshine.
